Cat Laying in Windowsill

Cats sleep an average of 12–16 hours a day, often in short bursts called “catnaps,” due to their biology and instincts as natural predators. As obligate carnivores, their wild ancestors conserved energy for hunting, a trait domesticated cats retain. This sleep pattern allows them to recharge efficiently, with deep REM sleep during naps supporting brain health and memory. Kittens and senior cats may sleep even more to support growth or conserve energy. Environmental factors, like a safe, comfortable home, encourage longer rest, while boredom or stress can also lead to excessive sleeping. A consistent routine with playtime, using toys like feather wands to mimic hunting, helps balance their energy. Diet plays a role too—high-protein meals fuel their metabolism without overloading their system. If your cat’s sleep suddenly increases or is paired with lethargy or appetite changes, consult a vet to rule out health issues like anemia or thyroid problems. With proper care, your cat’s love for sleep keeps them healthy and ready for their next playful pounce.
